Mixed numbers

A mixed number has a whole number and a fraction together.

e.g. 1 ½

Mixed numbers can be written as fractions.

To do this

Multiply the whole number by the denominator of the fraction and add the numerator of the fraction.

1 ½ = 1 x 2 + 1= 3/2

How can we find the fraction of a number?

To find the fraction of a number, divide it by the denominator (the bottom number) of the fraction.

 e.g. 1/2 of 8 is 8 divided by 2 =4  ,      1/4 of 8 is 8 divide by 4 = 2

If the numerator (the top number) is not 1, then we multiply by the numerator.

e.g. 1/4 of 40 is 40 divided by 4=10, 3/4 of 40 is 30

Atmosphere

This morning, we were thinking about ways of building atmosphere in our writing. Here are some of the sentences we came up with.

As I opened the door, spiders started crawling, ants started running, bees started stinging.

As I walked in the forest, I held tightly to my brother’s shirt.

I looked into the flat sea, listening to the silence.

The hole in the floor was really deep, and was covered in grey and silver spider webs.

As I opened the door, I heard the cackle of a witch.

The trees were long, twisted and looked new, while no stars shone in the midnight sky.

I hugged my brother close when I heard an evil laugh echo through the empty house.

As I opened the door, a tarantula ran out. and a tree root swept my feet from under me.

As I ran away from the footsteps, through the dusty hallway, millions of bloodthirsty vampire ants nipped at me as I passed.

As I got nearer, blood began to drip from the side of the box. I bent over to peer into the box. Suddenly, a killer clown jumped towards me.

The sun suddenly disappeared and all was dark.

Our day

On 29th March for Science we did air resistance and planned a fair test about parachutes. Then we did the test: Eya was holding the parachute and Noah was using the stopwatch to time -how long did it take to touch the floor?

In the ICT suite we were doing some weird shapes on the computer.

My Magic Box

I will put in the box the last breath of a stegosaurus, the soul of a velociraptor, and the brain of a pterodactyl.

I will put in the box the ghost of a triceratops, the lava of an ancient volcano and the remains of a destroyed meteor.

I will put in the box the marrow of a gigantosaurus, the beak of a quetzalcoatlus and a tar pool full of bones.

I will put in the box the light of an ancient thunderstorm, the genes of an ichthyosaur, and the eye of a plesiosaurus.

My box is made of skeletons of old, a diplodocus’ top jaw for the lid, velociraptor’s teeth for nails, and T-rex scales for covering.

In my box I shall search for treasure, bones and plants, and I will sculpt the land with an ancestor by my side.

The silent poem

It was so silent I heard
Some wood in a fire whispering
like someone stepping in autumn leaves.

It was so silent I heard
The wind singing a lullaby to the clouds
as they slowly fall asleep.

It was so silent I heard
A small hair push, wriggle and try hard to grow to be a large hair

It was so silent I heard
The trees sigh as if spring had not come, and will, in fact, never come

It was so silent I heard
The scared baby raindrops screaming
as the clouds dropped them into the puddle below.

It was so silent I heard
Two bluebirds snoring while they slept on a roost.

What is water resistance?

Posted 19 March, 2007 by Rachel Powell
Categories: lessons, Science

When two surfaces rub together, there is friction. When an object moves in water,  the force that stops it moving is called water resistance. To move in water, the object has to push water out of the way.

Some shapes have more water resistance than others.

Boats have pointed fronts to reduce the water resistance working against them. Fish are streamlined to reduce the water resistance and make it easier for them to move.

People  say that raincoats are water resistant, but this is not the same thing. This means that water cannot go through something, or that they are waterproof.  By 4 New Zealand
